The Garden Route doesn’t slow down in winter—it simply swaps salty swims for cozy adventures, warm food, and festive energy. If you’re planning a family getaway this cooler season, there’s no shortage of events to keep everyone entertained, from toddlers to teens (and yes, the grown-ups too).

Here are some of our favourite family-friendly winter festivals happening along the Garden Route:

Knysna Oyster Festival

Knysna | 04–13 July 2025

South Africa’s winter “fun-ival”! Don’t let the name fool you- this isn’t just about oysters. Expect forest trail runs, kiddie cycle races, art workshops, local theatre, cooking fun, and street parades. It’s one of the region’s most loved events and is packed with entertainment for all ages.

Knysna Forest Marathon

Knysna | 12 July 2025 (part of the Oyster Festival)

This iconic race winds through indigenous forest, misty trails, and wide gravel roads - and it’s not just for seasoned runners. There's a Family Fun Run and junior race options too, so the whole crew can get involved and experience the thrill of racing through one of SA’s most scenic routes.

Plett Ocean Festival

Plettenberg Bay | 04–13 July 2025

Celebrate the magic of the ocean with marine-inspired talks, beach cleanups, interactive kids’ activities, and a deep dive into the rich biodiversity of our coastline. Great for curious little minds (and parents who secretly love learning too).

Klein Karoo Klassique

 Oudtshoorn | 1–3 August 2025

A cultural winter gem set in the heart of the Klein Karoo, this elegant festival combines classical music concerts with art exhibitions, food stalls, and local wine tastings. While parts are tailored to adults, families can enjoy open-air performances, exhibitions, and the charming town setting of Oudtshoorn at a slower winter pace.

Whale Season & Park runs - All along the coast | June–November

Bonus winter fun? Whale watching from the shorelines in Plett or Wilderness. And if your family’s active, you’ll love the Saturday parkruns across the Garden Route—free, fun, and community-driven.
