Stanley Island Garden Route Plettenberg Bay Canoeing
Stanley Island being an island in the middle of the Keurbooms River has the distinct advantage of being a watersport paradise.
We have several two-man indian canoes availible on the Island for the use of our guests. The Keurbooms River is ideal to explore by canoe as there are many areas to shallow to access by motorboat. These quieter areas generally have a richer abundance of bird and fishlife easily viewed from canoes. The indian canoes are very stable and easy to paddle.
The Keurbooms river is navigatable for 5km upstream through the Keurbooms nature reserve. The narrow gorges and dense indigeneous forest is very scenic and has several secluded beaches ideal for picnics or just taking a breather while exploring the river. Plettenberg Bay has a wonderfull eastuary that Stanley island forms part of. You can choose to either paddle upstream into the indigeneous nature reserve with abundant milkwoods, yellowwoods, bushbuck and abundant forest birds. Downstream is home to a seagull sanctuary with a myriad of nesting seagulls, oystercatchers, herons and many more seabirds.
Come and enjoy canoeing off Stanley Island and see why Plettenberg Bay is seen as the heart of the Garden Route. For the more adventurous there is some wonderfull sea kayaking availible to spot dolphins and sometimes whales in their natural environment while kayaking in the sea off Plettenberg Bay.
